Forget widespread easy to pick out attacks, the new and upcoming thing is targetted attacks. These targetted attacks are flying under the radar. Many home users become infected with malware, but what happens when corporations are targetted? I’m not talking about a virus that attacks the network and sends out mass emails. I’m talking about instead of sending many emails to try and infect people it sends one to only a couple of people disguised as some kind of Word document and tricks the user into opening it. Not to mention the patch for this exploit was just released, so not all the machines in a huge corporation would be patched yet… Many anti-virus companies are working on better Heuristics, which are programs that use pattern recognition instead of using algorithm based programs. This is due to the many zero-day exploits, which are exploits that don’t have a signature of definition file to help protect the machine.
