Ubuntu has to be one of my favourites, though I started using Kubuntu with KDE4 and it was quite fun also. Hopefully 8.10 Itrepid Ibex will be better.-Steve

Great to see you looking into the newer linux flavours. Not only is Ubuntu the only Linux OS I've ever been able to get fully operational, it is faster, better looking (when you tweak it by using www.gnome-look.org), and free.My impetus was the bogged down feeling I got from XP, having to use antivirus in the background. Windows also needs periodical cleaning to get it running a fast as when you started. I considered buying a new computer (translation: "upgrade" to Vista and thus need powerhorse PC), but the machine I've had is fine. Ubuntu has made my older but still respectable (750MB RAM, 1.47Ghz) PC a slicker, quicker machine now with a "new car smell" to it.

That is great to hear more good things. If you go 32 bit then the world is a lot more compatible place. I have friends using 32 bit Skype with web cams and it works flawlessly.Having said that, all of a sudden 32bit flash is causing issues on three of my machines with Firefox 3. An upgrade to flash 10 beta fixes that, but Ubuntu makes it hard to find where to put the plugins. It appears to be an issue with pulseaudio and flash.

Using the 64bit version of any flavour of Linux (or Vista) will cause issues. 64 bit flash, 64 bit Java etc will make life difficult.
