What Is The Best AntiVirus Software?

I received a question via my skribit widget on my blog asking “what is the best antivirus?” My personal favorite is NOD32 (not free), however, if you want a free solution I would recommend either Anti-Vir or Avast!.

NOD32 is an excellent choice due its light footprint (very light on system resources) and phenomenal definition files and heuristics.  It’s not a bad price either all things considered ($40/year subscription), especially if it can remove a virus from your computer without you having to bring in your PC to a local computer shop or GeekSquad, which of course, would save you money.

Another possible solution (not free) is Kaspersky which is the second best anti-virus on the market currently.

On the other hand, I do not recommend any Symantec or Mcafee products, nor do I recommend you buy those all in one security suites.  Both Symantec and Mcafee software over the past number of years has become very bloated and have poor definition files (often times do not catch most computer viruses).  The security suites are generally packed with software that is useless, bloated, and/or has better alternatives for either free or less money.

What anti-virus do you use?  Leave a comment!

Sadly, I use McAfee but, I have AVG also installed. Usuallu AVG will catch something before McAfee.

Avast Home Edition (free) hasn’t failed me yet and is also very resource-friendly.

I use Avast (free) and I love it. Prior to that I used AVG Free and ran into some problems with that one.

I use(d) AVG free, which is still supported although grisoft make it more difficult to find that product on their site. In fact, AVG was being a beeyotch, I’d come down in the morning to ’caused an error and had to close’ messages all the time. I was fixing to move to Avast as per this blog post but instead I moved to Kubuntu. ;oP

I have problems using AVG on vista, so I use Avira Antivirus, becuase it works away quitly in the background and does not slow down my system

    Dude you are right on.
I fix computers for a living and Symantec is the most resource hungry and it misses just about every virus out there.
How many times have I taken off Symantecs rubbish and installed Avira (Anti-Vir) I can't count.
Seriously Symantec should be filed in the ranks of the fake AV software because they are useless at keeping viruses off your PC, they charge way too much, and it often slows PCs to a grinding halt.
OK so we do use other software to clean the pox off these comp's one of these is Malwarebytes and the other one, well let me keep one trick up my sleeve.
BTW I dont recommend AVG, it seems to miss way too many viruses.
