Spyware Guard 2008 is a rogue application that has intentional false positives and demands you pay money to remove them. If you have Spyware Guard 2008 on your machine, please take the time to download and install Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware.

In order to remove Spyware Guard 2008 from your computer, please follow the instructions below.

Download Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:
o Update Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware
o Launch Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware
* Then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. The rogue application should now be gone.

If for some reason you are unable to run Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware due to the infection blocking it, try this work-around method.

If you should require further assistance feel free to post on our forums.

Why not run a full scan instead of a quick scan?

I downloaded the Anti-Malware program on my desktop computer and copied the file to a thumb drive … because the browser on my infected laptop won’t get to this or any other security-oriented sites. I then copy the program onto the laptop and when I double-click on the program it will not start up. Any thoughts on what to do or try next?

    Worked like a charm. Thanks!

Followed Jeff’s instruction in making the ‘fix’ folder with files on a clean machine. The ’12setup.exe’ ran fine in installing and updating the mbam.exe program, but could not get ‘install.bat’ execute properly. Manually RUN’ning the mbam.exe also did not work. When I renamed mbam.exe to some other name, the trick worked and I was able to run the scan to remove Spyware Guard 2008.

Thanks for your MB my machine which was infected with lots of Trojans and Malwares got cleaned up. Funny thing is I am using McAfee Virus Scan plus which was disabled or corrupted. As soon as MB cleaned up Trojans McAfee also started working by catching Trojan or 2 ! Wonder why am I paying for McAfee when MB is doing the job?

My desktop is infected w/ Spywareguard 2008. It will not let me go to any online site, fails or gets redirected. I downloaded malwarebytes to a flash drive from my laptop. I tried loading on to desktop. It seems to load (takes a while), i click finish but it does not open up after. Icon is on desktop but it will not open. I tried renaming setup exe file, no difference. Tried in safe mode with no luck also. I downloaded superantispyware to flash drive and it won’t even open on desktop. I have tried manually with no luck. I am stuck and ready to format my hard drive. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thank You

My friend has Spywareguard 2008 on his laptop. I followed the directions. Downloaded the malwarebytes as per the link. Saved the file in a folder on my desktop. Copied the link and created the prep file. When I double click the prep file it will rename the file but not rules.ref file appears. What am I doing wrong?

A full scan is not necessary. The quick scan is more than sufficient. In fact, even the developers only run the quick scan when they are testing new pieces of malware. You can listen for yourself if you would like to an interview with one of the developers of the product here: http://www.besttechie.net/2008/08/20/malwarebytes-developer-interview/

Dinesh: Yeah, I’m not a big fan of McAfee at all. If you want to look into an AntiVirus check out NOD32 (paid) or AntiVir (free). You may also want to consider purchasing Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware to enable the real-time protection to help keep you protected further and in the future.

Linda – are you doing the steps on a non-infected machine? If not, you need to do it on a clean machine and then copy over the files to the infected one.
