iPhone Review

Submitted by Jeff Weisbein on January 2, 2009 – 12:04 AM0 Comments

I just got an iPhone 3G (16GB / Black Model) and I love it! It is the best phone I have ever owned and surprisingly the AT&T service is better than I thought it would be. Switching to AT&T was a big concern for me after hearing a lot of issues with their service in the New York area. However, I couldn’t let that stop me from getting my iPhone.

The phone is great, the form factor takes a little getting used to but it’s definitely not uncomfortable or too bulky (at least with the right case).  I highly recommend picking up a case, it picks up finger prints and smudges way too easily without one and I’m a stickler when it comes to keeping my stuff clean and looking like brand new.

The AT&T service is also quite good.  I actually have full bars in my house for once – I never had that with Verizon.  Of course living in New York I have access to a 3G network and it’s wonderful.  It’s definitely fast enough to browse the web and download applications/files without much pain.  I’m not a big fan of the plans (the way they break everything up) AT&T offers, but, what are you going to do.  Below is my plan and price per month for an individual line:

$60 for minutes (900 minutes / unlimited night and weekends + unlimited mobile to mobile)
$30 for data (unlimited data – mandatory for the iPhone)
$20 for text (unlimited text messages)
—-
$110/month

Overall, I guess it’s not too bad.

When it comes to applications, the App Store is fantastic.  I’ve been downloading apps non-stop.  Here is a list of my current top 10 favorites (some are free, some are paid):

1. Air Sharing – Remotely share files between your iPhone/iPod Touch and computers
2. Fring – Access AIM, MSN, Skype, Yahoo, Google Talk, etc from a single chat application
3. Mocha VNC Lite – Free VNC client for your iPhone/iPod Touch
4. SmartDial – The best dialing pad for the iPhone
5. Rooms – Best iPhone/iPod Touch IRC client
6. Tweetie – My favorite Twitter client for the iPhone/iPod Touch
7. Shazam – Identifies songs with the proper title and artist
8. Ocarina – Fun application to create little melodies with your iPhone as well as listens to others around the world
9. New York Times – Read the New York Times on your iPhone/iPod Touch
10. Remote – Control iTunes directly from your iPhone/iPod Touch

Do you have an iPhone? How do you like it? Leave a comment! Feel free to list some other apps you enjoy as well.
