Hi guys! I would like to write a program from scratch to keep score and statistics for our cricket team. I have never attemted something like this, but would like to try it as a hobbie, so time is not of the essence. What should I learn and which programs should I use?

I would preferably like to do this on linux.

If you like linux, I would recommend python. It is a program language that is for beginners, but very powerful. It is the perfect language for doing what you need. Python runs also on mac and windows, among others.

Open Office 2.2 is available free at http://www.openoffice.org/ and includes an Excel compatible program called "Calc". Runs on Linux or Windows. It's a large download on dialup but I've done it overnight (you probable have a version w/ your OS).

I found a cricket spreadsheed (Excel): http://exceltemplates.blogspot.com/2007/03...2007-excel.html that you might want to download and open with Open Office "Calc" (you might be able to adapt it for your own use)

There might be others at: http://www.google.com/search?num=100&h...amp;btnG=Search

Good Luck!

Seconded. This problem screams "spreadsheet".

A spreadsheet may be more efficient, but writing a program from scratch in python may me more hobby like and more rewarding.
