A few years ago, I paid a professional to help me design a logo. They gave me these formats: ai, jpeg, pdf, eps and bitmat. I do not own illustrator and I would like to use the gimp. Other then the illustrator format(ai), I don't think I am able to do much manipulation with the formats given to me. I just got a 30 trial of Adobe illustrator. Now that I can open the ai file, I would like to save it in formats that will be most useful to me before my 30 trial runs out. Should I use Illustrator to save the logo as an svg file? Would this file format allow me to have the most flexibility when using it with the gimp? What other format would be preferred?

Save it as .png then the majority of image editors can work with it.

Are you sure you want to use a raster editor to edit vector images? Why not use Inkscape instead? It's free and has support for opening Adobe Illustrator files out of the box.
