According to an article by Laurie Varendorff, an Australian records management expert, Microsoft and IBM have developed software that enables creators of e-mail messages to have tremendous control over their messages, even after they have been sent.

Self-destructing email comes up every few years. No chance it'll become universal. If the self-destruction trigger hooks into the email client, people will use different clients. If the mail isn't readable with other clients, people won't use the self-destruction feature. If it requires a change to the email platform (e.g., SMTP) it's dead on arrival; no way they're going to be able to convince every MTA to adopt it.

The bit about Words documents and whatnot will happen, and limited use of self-destructing email is likely, but DRM is probably too complex for most people to use.

I figured it out.

There is an internal timer. This timer, once triggered, will start the destruction after six months.

It's a plot by M$ for you to go back to their update site, where they secretly harvest the raw data(that you thought was destroyed) from your machine. Email addys, SS#, bank account numbers, and yes even the porn you accidently downloaded that one time. wink wink.
