Found this link on distrowatch.com...It makes setting up extra apt-get sources pretty easy (such as getting codecs for multimedia as well as quite few others that aren't in the default ubuntu sources.list)

Just thought I'd add for anyone using Mandriva that http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ does more or less the same thing for that distro.
